A very nice rare footage of Kyorugi training in 1997
This footage of Kyorugi training was recorded in 1997, It's been 27 years ago.
In this period of time, Taekwondo has changed completely!
In the past 25 years, the practice of Taekwondo has evolved significantly, leading to changes in the power of kicks, style, and scoring system. These changes have had a profound effect on the overall image of Taekwondo, with some practitioners embracing the new style while others long for the days of traditional Taekwondo.
One of the most noticeable changes in Taekwondo over the past two and a half decades has been the decrease in the power of kicks. With advancements in training techniques and technology, athletes aren't now able to generate more force in their kicks than before, this is why we rarely can see knockouts in Taekwondo kyorugi competitions.
In addition to changes in power, the style of Taekwondo has also shifted over the years. While traditional Taekwondo focused on the use of powerful kicks and strikes, modern Taekwondo focused on scoring techniques.
The scoring system in Taekwondo has also undergone significant changes in the past 25 years. Previously, points were awarded based on the force and accuracy of strikes. However, with the introduction of electronic scoring devices, the scoring system in Taekwondo has become more precise and objective, but athletes do not need to delver much power to score points, especially when the kicks touch the head. also the coaches are allowed to use their card to ask for a video reply to check about points. This has led to a more transparent and fair judging process, with athletes now able to rely on the accuracy of the technology to determine the outcome of their matches.
While these changes have undoubtedly improved some sides of Taekwondo, there are some practitioners who long for the days of traditional Taekwondo. They believe that the emphasis on power and technique in the past has been lost in the pursuit of a more modern and dynamic style of fighting. These traditionalists argue that the soul and essence of Taekwondo have been diluted by the incorporation of other martial arts techniques, leading to a loss of authenticity in the practice of the sport.
