A knockout or KO or K.O is a fight-ending, and it is how many fights end up in several full-contact combat sports, such Taekwondo, kickboxing, boxing, , Muay Thai, mixed martial arts, karate. Many people do not really understand clearly what is happening during knockouts or knock downs! So what really happens during the knockouts and the knock downs? The strong kicks or punches to the head the makes the brain moves around in the skull.
The heaviest part of the brain puts a lot of pressure on the brainstem, which can be twisted and pulled during the blow as the rest of the brain moves out of place. In Taekwondo 99% of the knockouts and the knock downs are caused mostly by kicks t the head, sometimes by kicks to the body. Punches to the body are used in Taekwondo kyorugi (sparring) but it does not cause big damage. It's been only one time that a knock down happened because of a punch to the body, besides that one, we have not witnessed any. There are two types of knockouts, a knockout (KO) and a technical knockout (TKO). What is a TKO vs KO?
A knockout or KO is a win wherein the opponent is unable to get up before the referee counts to ten while a technical knockout or TKO is a win wherein the fight is stopped because the opponent is unable to go on. Some parts on the head are more sensitive and strong kicks there can easily cause knockout. Hitting the jaw of a person for example with sufficient power and the perfect angle will cause the head to rotate around, which causes a maximum movement of the skull which affects the brain. lately, we do not see many knockouts in Taekwondo because the style changed a lot compared to the old days.
Here is a video that shows a Taekwondo knockout during some championships in China.
